  • Hospice 101: What you need to know

Hospice care can feel overwhelming when you’re first exploring it. At United Hospice & Palliative Care of Arizona, we’re here to walk you through every step, answer your questions, and help you understand what hospice really means—for you and your loved one.
  • What is hospice care?

Hospice is specialized medical care focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for individuals with a life-limiting illness. It’s designed to support not only the patient, but also their family—emotionally, spiritually, and practically.
  • When should someone consider hospice?

Hospice can be considered when curative treatments are no longer effective or desired, and the focus shifts to comfort and quality of life. It’s appropriate for patients with a prognosis of six months or less, as certified by a physician.
  • Where is hospice care provided?

Hospice is not a place—it’s a service. We provide care wherever the patient calls home, including private homes, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing homes, and group homes.
  • Does hospice mean we’re giving up?

Not at all. Choosing hospice means focusing on comfort, peace, and what matters most to your loved one. Many families tell us they wish they had started hospice sooner.
  • Who pays for hospice?

Hospice is fully covered by Medicare, Medicaid (AHCCCS), and most private insurance plans. This includes all visits, medications, supplies, equipment, and support related to the terminal illness.
  • What does hospice include?

    • Skilled nursing and nurse practitioner visits • Pain and symptom management • Medications related to the terminal illness • Medical equipment and supplies (like a hospital bed or oxygen) • Home health aide visits • Social work and counseling • Spiritual support • 24/7 access to on-call nurse • Bereavement support for the family
  • Can a patient stop hospice if they change their mind?

Yes. Hospice is a choice. Patients can revoke hospice at any time and resume curative treatments if they wish.
  • Can a patient live longer than six months on hospice?

Yes. If a patient outlives the initial six-month prognosis but continues to meet eligibility, hospice care can be recertified and continued.
  • Do you provide 24/7 care?

We provide 24/7 access to on-call nurses, and in crisis situations, we can provide continuous nursing support through our “Continuous Home Care” level. We do not provide 24-hour custodial or sitter services.
